If your still feeling unsure about the safety of your fish you might want to use some danios or some kind of guinea pig fish to test the water before you put your prize specimens in there, especially if your nitrates are high.
Mar 20, 2020 I'm a bleacher too. But I sometimes bleach wood soak, dechlorinate rinse it a few times if it's a cool piece...it's a bit of a judgement call: cool wood vs effort to make it safe. Drying out thoroughly in sunlight in-between bleaching etc. helps kill bacteria other stuff too. Your small 10g makes disinfecting easier than a larger tank.

May 24, 2016 After the bark is pealed, you should rinse the knee in clean water dry the knees in bright sunshine or near a woodstove or heat source with a fan blowing on them. Drying may take two weeks or longer. Drying too slowly or in the shade will cause mold. Drying too quickly will cause cracks.
Remember to collect wood from rural areas and make sure you have permission. Look for dry pieces with no mould, rot or fungus. It’s also fine to take “cuttings” from living trees but again, make sure you have permission or make friends with a tree surgeon. I prefer to dry out newly cut or collected wood for a couple of weeks to remove any remaining sap, then soak it.
